Families on Mission
So family, the word and the meaning is such an emotional one. No one can say it or hear it without thinking of a photo shoot of a color-coordinated tanned couple on a beach with 2 or 3 adorable children. There are so many things wrong with this image. Firstly it’s not biblically or historically accurate. Its how we might think today but for generations previously and in most cultures family is a multi-generational group of people made of blood and non-blood relationships. This was the cornerstone and bedrock of the early church. Its where the early church was protected and grew.
Secondly, the photo is static its a moment in time captured but it's not reality. Families are not static they change and grow in lots of ways. Family on mission is never meant to be unchanging and fixed. Its meant to be dynamic constantly changing while having principles at its heart.
Mike and I have personally seen so many variations of our own family on mission, it's hard to remember them all. If we are called to be missional I can guarantee at some point in the journey with your present family on mission it will have the effect of causing change. Sometimes the change will be subtle like a change in when or where you meet or it could be big like a small number of your family going to another country. We must celebrate and embrace it all as we should embrace and celebrate the many wonderful and varied ways families on mission can contain and love all types of people.
The challenge is not to expect to stay the same but to look for God’s grace and direction. To hear his voice and then do something about it. That's rarely passive. Embrace all the stages, its all family on mission, it's all messy and complicate and will forever evoke an emotional response in our hearts but keep pursuing it. Its worth it!
