What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?

Can modern disciples learn to live like the Twelve?

Are there patterns in the Gospels we can follow?

How can we help each other along the way?

These are the questions I have been asking for most of my Christian journey. They are what I had in mind when I became a church leader and they are the reason I persisted at it for twenty five years. They are also the reason I took three months off work to interrogate the pages and the culture of the New Testament with that single question in mind: what does following Jesus look like?

I believe that when Jesus told his disciples to ‘make disciples… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you’, he was not trying to be enigmatic. He meant it. And he was confident that he had set a pattern that would make it possible for those who walked with him, and us, to do so.Despite this conviction, I had become suspicious of programs that promised quick fixes. In truth, it was the honesty of those who are now my colleagues at 3DM that melted my resistance to their methodology. They had made all the mistakes I had and had learned from them. I then began seeing themes and patterns in John’s gospel in a fresh way. I began writing in order to sort my thoughts. I also began learning things about Jesus I had never been taught at theological college and about myself as his follower.
